Mitts, gloves and mittens

Knit from the wrist up, with a thumb gusset at the side: one set of instructions serves both hands; with a placed motif or a drawing, the right and left hands are written separately. Fingerless, gloves (half or full fingers) or mittens.

Style

The hand stops just above the knuckles, with a short thumb: the fingers stay free.

Size

Edgings
Hand pattern

The pattern goes around the hand above the thumb; the lower hand and the gusset stay in stockinette.

Placed motifs

Choose a chart (cables, lace, bobbles… from the library or the editor) and place it on a piece. The stitches to add under cables are worked out, to keep the width.

Draw on the piece

For a free design, like in a photo: cabled stems, an X, wheat ears, scattered bobbles. The drawing is made for the chosen size; in other sizes it keeps its place from the center and from the top.

Materials

  • Yarn: Rowan · Rowan Selects Cashmere, about 90 m.
  • (or a long circular for magic loop) in your gauge size.
  • 2 (one in a contrast color for the beginning of the round), waste yarn to hold the thumb, a tapestry needle.

20 stitches × 28 rows = 10 cm in the body stitch, after blocking. Yardage is for a pair.

Cuff

36 sts, divide them over the needles and join in the round without twisting. Place the beginning-of-round marker: it is at the side, where the thumb will be.

Work in (k2, p2) for 14 rounds, i.e. 5 cm.

Next round, adjusting the stitch count: *k16, k2tog* 2 times. You now have 34 sts.

Thumb gusset

Work 3 rounds of stockinette.

Set-up round: M1L right after the beginning-of-round marker, place a marker, knit to the end of the round. The gusset is between the beginning-of-round marker and this marker: 1 st.

Increase round: slip marker, M1L, knit to the next marker, M1R, slip marker, knit to the end of the round. +2 sts.

Work this round once, after 3 rounds, then every 2 rounds 4 times (the first on the 3rd round after the set-up), knitting the other rounds plain: the gusset has 11 sts. You are at the thumb crotch.

Next round: remove the gusset marker, place the 11 gusset sts on waste yarn, 2 sts over the gap, knit to the end of the round: 36 sts.

Hand

Work 11 rounds of (about 3.9 cm), up to the base of the fingers.

Top of the hand

Work 3 more rounds.

Work in (k1, p1) for 3 rounds, i.e. 1.1 cm.

loosely in rib.

Thumb

Put the 11 gusset sts back on the needles and 2 sts in the stitches cast on above, plus 1 st in each corner to avoid holes: 15 sts. Next round: knit each corner stitch together with its neighbor (k2tog): 13 sts.

Work 4 rounds, then the edging below, and bind off.

On an odd number of stitches, two knit stitches sit side by side at the start of the round: on a finger, it doesn't show.

Work in (k1, p1) for 3 rounds, i.e. 1.1 cm.

loosely in rib.

Finishing

Knit the second one the same way: the thumb is at the side, so they fit both hands. Weave in the ends, closing the small gaps at the base of the thumb. lightly.

The numbers come from your swatch: knit it in the round, like the mitts.
