Choose a chart (cables, lace, bobbles… from the library or the editor) and place it on a piece. The stitches to add under cables are worked out, to keep the width.

Draw on the piece

For a free design, like in a photo: cabled stems, an X, wheat ears, scattered bobbles. The drawing is made for the chosen size; in other sizes it keeps its place from the center and from the top.

Fit

A hat is smaller than the head so it stays on: 10% suits most yarns.

Materials

  • Yarn: Rowan · Wool Cotton 4ply, about 160 m.
  • 40 cm circular needle in your gauge size, and a set of (or a long circular needle for magic loop) for the .
  • 8 , one in a different color for the start of the round; a tapestry needle.

28 stitches × 36 rows = 10 cm in the body stitch, after blocking.

Brim

144 stitches. Join in the round without twisting; place the beginning-of-round marker.

Work in (k2, p2) for 18 rounds, i.e. 5 cm.

Body

Knit every stitch for 33 rounds, or 9.2 cm. The hat now measures 14.2 cm from the cast-on edge.

Crown

Place a marker every 18 stitches: 8 sections (the beginning-of-round marker marks the first one). When the stitches no longer reach around the circular needle, switch to double-pointed needles (or magic loop).

Finishing

Cut the yarn leaving a 20 cm tail. With the tapestry needle, thread it through the remaining 8 stitches, pull tight and fasten off on the inside.

Weave in the ends, then the hat flat or over a balloon the size of the head.

Pattern calculated by FARROW. Check your gauge before you start: every number depends on it.
