Choose a chart (cables, lace, bobbles… from the library or the editor) and place it on a piece. The stitches to add under cables are worked out, to keep the width.

Draw on the piece

For a free design, like in a photo: cabled stems, an X, wheat ears, scattered bobbles. The drawing is made for the chosen size; in other sizes it keeps its place from the center and from the top.

Fit

A hat is smaller than the head so it stays on: 10% suits most yarns.

Materials

  • Yarn: Lang Yarns · Super Soxx Color 6-ply, about 150 m.
  • 40 cm circular needle in your gauge size, and a set of (or a long circular needle for magic loop) for the .
  • 8 , one in a different color for the start of the round; a tapestry needle.

22 stitches × 33 rows = 10 cm in the body stitch, after blocking.

Brim

112 stitches. Join in the round without twisting; place the beginning-of-round marker.

Work in (k2, p2) for 17 rounds, i.e. 5.2 cm.

Body

Knit every stitch for 33 rounds, or 10 cm. The hat now measures 15.2 cm from the cast-on edge.

Crown

Place a marker every 14 stitches: 8 sections (the beginning-of-round marker marks the first one). When the stitches no longer reach around the circular needle, switch to double-pointed needles (or magic loop).

Finishing

Cut the yarn leaving a 20 cm tail. With the tapestry needle, thread it through the remaining 8 stitches, pull tight and fasten off on the inside.

Weave in the ends, then the hat flat or over a balloon the size of the head.

Pattern calculated by FARROW. Check your gauge before you start: every number depends on it.
