Mitts, gloves and mittens

Knit from the wrist up, with a thumb gusset at the side: one set of instructions serves both hands; with a placed motif or a drawing, the right and left hands are written separately. Fingerless, gloves (half or full fingers) or mittens.

Style

Each finger has its own little tube: half fingers to keep the fingertips free, or full fingers for gloves.

Size
Hand measurements (cm)

Measure the hand above the thumb, at the base of the fingers, hand flat.

Ease

A little less than the hand (−1 cm): the mitt stays put.

Hand pattern

The pattern goes around the hand above the thumb; the lower hand and the gusset stay in stockinette.

Placed motifs

Choose a chart (cables, lace, bobbles… from the library or the editor) and place it on a piece. The stitches to add under cables are worked out, to keep the width.

Draw on the piece

For a free design, like in a photo: cabled stems, an X, wheat ears, scattered bobbles. The drawing is made for the chosen size; in other sizes it keeps its place from the center and from the top.

The pattern

Materials

  • Yarn: about 200 m.
  • (or a long circular for magic loop) in your gauge size.
  • 2 (one in a contrast color for the beginning of the round), one or two lengths of waste yarn to hold the thumb and fingers, a tapestry needle.

28 stitches × 36 rows = 10 cm in the body stitch, after blocking. Yardage is for a pair.

Cuff

48 sts, divide them over the needles and join in the round without twisting. Place the beginning-of-round marker: it is at the side, where the thumb will be.

Work in (k2, p2) for 18 rounds, i.e. 5 cm.

Next round, adjusting the stitch count: k46, k2tog. You now have 47 sts.

Thumb gusset

Work 4 rounds of stockinette.

Set-up round: M1L right after the beginning-of-round marker, place a marker, knit to the end of the round. The gusset is between the beginning-of-round marker and this marker: 1 st.

Increase round: slip marker, M1L, knit to the next marker, M1R, slip marker, knit to the end of the round. +2 sts.

Work this round once, after 3 rounds, then every 2 rounds 6 times (the first on the 3rd round after the set-up), knitting the other rounds plain: the gusset has 15 sts. You are at the thumb crotch.

Next round: remove the gusset marker, place the 15 gusset sts on waste yarn, 3 sts over the gap, knit to the end of the round: 50 sts.

Hand

Work 10 rounds of (about 2.8 cm), up to the base of the little finger.

Fingers

Little finger, a little lower than the others: knit 20 sts; place the next 10 sts on waste yarn; 3 sts over the gap; knit to the end of the round: 43 sts.

Work 4 more rounds, up to the base of the other fingers.

Each finger is knit in the round on its own stitches; work the fingers in this order.

Index: keep the first 8 and the last 7 sts of the round, place the others on hold; 2 sts between them (the gusset between fingers): 17 sts.

Work 25 rounds (about 6.9 cm; the finger should measure 7.2 cm in all: try it on, it should reach almost to the fingertip), then k2tog all around, knit 1 round, then k2tog all around again (on an odd count, knit the last stitch alone); cut the yarn, thread it through the remaining stitches and pull tight.

Middle finger: slip the next 7 sts back onto the needles on one side and the matching 7 sts on the other, cast on 2 sts and 2 sts at the base of the index: 18 sts.

Work 28 rounds (about 7.8 cm; the finger should measure 8.1 cm in all: try it on, it should reach almost to the fingertip), then k2tog all around, knit 1 round, then k2tog all around again (on an odd count, knit the last stitch alone); cut the yarn, thread it through the remaining stitches and pull tight.

Ring finger: slip the remaining 14 sts back onto the needles (including the stitches cast on above the little finger) and 2 sts at the base of the middle finger: 16 sts.

Work 26 rounds (about 7.2 cm; the finger should measure 7.6 cm in all: try it on, it should reach almost to the fingertip), then k2tog all around, knit 1 round, then k2tog all around again; cut the yarn, thread it through the remaining stitches and pull tight.

Little finger: slip the 10 held sts back onto the needles and 3 sts in the stitches cast on above: 13 sts.

Work 19 rounds (about 5.3 cm; the finger should measure 5.4 cm in all: try it on, it should reach almost to the fingertip), then k2tog all around (on an odd count, knit the last stitch alone); cut the yarn, thread it through the remaining stitches and pull tight.

Thumb

Put the 15 gusset sts back on the needles and 3 sts in the stitches cast on above, plus 1 st in each corner to avoid holes: 20 sts. Next round: knit each corner stitch together with its neighbor (k2tog): 18 sts.

Work 20 rounds (about 5.6 cm; the thumb should measure 6 cm in all: try it on, it should reach almost to the tip of the thumb), then k2tog all around, knit 1 round, then k2tog all around again (on an odd count, knit the last stitch alone); cut the yarn, thread it through the remaining stitches and pull tight.

Finishing

Knit the second one the same way: the thumb is at the side, so they fit both hands. Weave in the ends, closing the small gaps at the base of the thumb and fingers. lightly.

The numbers come from your swatch: knit it in the round, like the mitts.
