Shawl

Pick a shape; FARROW works out every row. A shawl grows as you knit it: it can stop exactly when the yarn runs out.

Shape

The great classic: start at the top, at the nape of the neck, and increase along two lines down to the point.

Yarn and

Size
Stitch

Smooth on one side; garter edges keep the sides from curling. Measure your swatch in stockinette.

Placed motifs

Choose a chart (cables, lace, bobbles… from the library or the editor) and place it on a piece. The stitches to add under cables are worked out, to keep the width.

Draw on the piece

For a free design, like in a photo: cabled stems, an X, wheat ears, scattered bobbles. The drawing is made for the chosen size; in other sizes it keeps its place from the center and from the top.

Materials

  • Yarn: Isager · Alpaca 1, about 1,680 m.
  • A 120 cm circular needle in your gauge size: you knit back and forth, and the cable carries the weight of the stitches.
  • 2 (on each side of the center stitch), a tapestry needle and pins for .

28 stitches × 34 rows = 10 cm in the body stitch, after blocking.

Start

7 stitches.

Row 1 (wrong side): k2, purl to the last 2 stitches, k2.

Place a on each side of the middle stitch: it is the center stitch, the spine of the shawl.

The 2 stitches at each edge are always knitted: this edge keeps the side from curling.

Body of the shawl

Right-side increase row: k2, , knit to marker, yo, slip marker, k1 (the center stitch), slip marker, yo, knit to the last 2 stitches, yo, k2. +4 sts.

Wrong-side row: k2, purl to the last 2 stitches (including yarn-overs), k2.

Repeat these 2 rows through row 313: you have 631 stitches. Rows 300 to 313 form the edging: keep increasing.

Edge and bind-off

Edging, rows 300 to 313 (14 rows), in : knit all, yarn-overs included.

very loosely, ideally with a larger needle: the edge must stretch when blocked.

Finishing

Weave in the ends without cutting them. the shawl: soak it, roll it in a towel, then pin it flat to the schematic measurements, opening up the yarn-overs. Trim the ends once dry.

Pattern calculated by FARROW. Blocking opens a shawl up a lot: block your swatch too to know the true size.
