Sweater

Knit top-down and seamless, in the construction of your choice: , round yoke, drop shoulder or set-in sleeves. You can try it on as you go.

Size
Body measurements (cm)

Measure the body, not a garment — except the neckline: that's the finished sweater's neck opening, wider than the neck so the head fits through (46 to 62 cm). Yoke depth runs from the base of the neck to the underarm.

When signed in, you can keep these measurements for yourself, your family or your friends, and reuse them in every pattern. Sign in

No yarn yet? These give about 22 stitches per 10 cm:

Yarns for the other colors

Color B
Color C

Choose a yarn for each chart color: the pattern names it and checks you have enough left, and the chart takes on its color. Color A is the yarn chosen above.

Measured on your swatch, after : the yoke is always in stockinette.

Neckline

The classic: a ribbed collar at the base of the neck.

More settings

Construction, body length and shape, sleeves, stitch, placed motifs, drawing and borders. Everything already has a recommended value: the pattern is complete without changing them.

Construction

Increases are spread all around the round, in a few rounds: the flares like a cone. The construction of Icelandic and Fair Isle sweaters, ideal for bands.

Colorwork bands

Band 1

Like Icelandic sweaters: one or more bands, wider and wider going down. Just before each band, an increase round brings the stitch count to a multiple of its chart; no increase ever falls inside a band.

Body

Length

Shape

Same width from underarm to hem: simple and timeless.

The lower body divides into pieces worked flat, each with its own edging; a few garter stitches edge each slit. With a longer back, its slit is longer by the same amount.

For a fuller bust: the front gets longer at the center; the sides and the back do not change. Measure from the shoulder to the hem over the bust point, then the same length on the back: the difference is the length to add (often 2 to 6 cm).

Sleeves

Length

Shape

Follows the arm and narrows to the edge: the classic.

Body stitch

The stays in : its increases would break the motif. The stitch pattern starts below the underarms.

Stripes

Stripes replace the colorwork bands of the yoke: remove those bands to knit stripes.

Stripes start under the collar, on the first round of the yoke, and run down without a break. Choose yarn B with the yarn, above. Borders can then be worked in striped rib.

Placed motifs

Choose a chart (cables, lace, bobbles… from the library or the editor) and place it on a piece. The stitches to add under cables are worked out, to keep the width.

Draw on the piece

For a free design, like in a photo: cabled stems, an X, wheat ears, scattered bobbles. The drawing is made for the chosen size; in other sizes it keeps its place from the center and from the top.

Materials

  • Yarn: about 1,190 m in color A.
  • Yarn: about 30 m in color B.
  • Yarn: about 20 m in color C.
  • 40 cm (collar) and 80 cm (yoke and body) circular needles, in your gauge size; or magic loop for the sleeves.
  • 2 (one in a different color for the beginning of the round), waste yarn to hold the sleeves, a tapestry needle.

22 stitches × 30 rows = 10 cm in stockinette, after blocking.

Collar

112 stitches. Join in the round without twisting; place the beginning-of-round marker: it marks the center back. Cast on loosely (tubular cast-on, or two needles held together): the head must fit through the collar.

Work in (k2, p2) for 8 rounds, i.e. 2.7 cm.

Back neck raise

With German , so the collar does not pull backwards:

  1. Row 1, right side: knit 19 sts past the marker; turn.
  2. Row 2, wrong side: make a double stitch, purl to the marker and 19 sts more; turn.
  3. Rows 3 to 6: continue the same way, going 4 sts past the previous double stitch each time.
  4. Resume knitting in the round to the start of the round, working each double stitch as one.

Circular

The increase rounds are spaced so the yoke widens evenly, like a cone.

Knit 6 rounds.

You have 340 stitches. The yoke measures 21.7 cm from the collar.

Dividing body and sleeves

From the center back: knit 52 sts; place the next 66 sts on waste yarn (right sleeve); 10 sts for the underarm; knit 104 sts (the front); place the next 66 sts on hold (left sleeve); cast on 10 sts; knit the remaining 52 back sts. You have 228 sts for the body. Knit to the middle of the stitches cast on under the right arm: this is the new start of the round.

Body

Knit every stitch for 93 rounds, or 31 cm from the underarm.

Work in (k2, p2) for 15 rounds, i.e. 5 cm.

Sleeves (both alike)

Return the 66 held sts to the needles and pick up 10 sts from the underarm cast-on: 76 sts. Place the beginning-of-round marker at the middle of the underarm.

Knit 8 rounds.

How to work a decrease round: k1, k2tog, knit to the last 3 sts, ssk, k1. −2 sts.

Next round, adjusting the stitch count for the edge: *k23, M1L* 2 times. You now have 48 sts.

Work in (k2, p2) for 15 rounds, i.e. 5 cm.
