Frequently asked questions
Short answers about the service, the patterns, yarn, your account and languages.
The service
What does FARROW actually do?
It calculates and writes knitting patterns. You pick a piece and enter your measurements, your yarn and your ; it writes the full pattern in every size, with the schematic and the .
Do I need to know how to write a pattern?
No. You need to know how to knit and how to measure a swatch. Every underlined technical term is explained in the glossary.
Does the 3D preview show the finished knit?
It is a preview: the proportions follow your pattern, but the look of the yarn is approximate. What counts is the written pattern and the schematic with its measurements.
Patterns
Which pieces can I make?
Sweaters and cardigans (, round , drop shoulder or set-in sleeves), tanks, sleeveless cardigans, camisoles, socks, gloves, mittens, fingerless mitts, shawls, hats, scarves, cowls and blankets. Others are in progress, including a dress and baby clothes.
Are the patterns checked?
The numbers are recalculated with every change, and the designer points out what doesn’t add up, such as a cuff wider than the top of the sleeve. Knit your swatch anyway: every number depends on it.
Can I choose my own stitches and motifs?
Yes, within what the studio offers: a stitch from the library over the whole body, placed motifs (a panel, a mirrored pair), stripes, a free drawing, or your own chart made in the editor. The pattern rewrites every row involved.
Can I reproduce a published pattern?
No. FARROW doesn’t copy existing patterns: it calculates your own version from the constructions and stitches it knows.
Can I print the pattern, or follow it on my phone?
Both. “Print or PDF” opens the print window; knitting mode shows one step at a time, with a row counter.
Yarn and stash
Do I have to use a yarn from the library?
No, any yarn works: all you need is its gauge. A yarn from the library fills in its suggested gauge, which you should check against your own swatch.
How do I add my yarn to my stash?
In My studio, “Add a yarn”: pick it from the library to fill in its details, or enter it by hand. Give the number of skeins, or the meters left on a started one.
What does “With what I have” do?
It suggests projects you can make with the yarn in your stash, based on its and yardage. Yardage is estimated for an average adult size.
Can I hold several yarns together?
Yes, up to 4 yarns and 6 strands. At the yarn step, choose “Several yarns held together”, then each yarn and its number of strands. FARROW estimates a starting and counts the of each yarn, multiplied by its number of strands. Then knit a swatch with these and record it in My swatches: the designer will use it instead of the estimate.
Your account
Do I need an account?
Not to try the designer, the stitches, the editor or the calculator. An account keeps your patterns, your stash and your progress. Sign-in has no password: we email you a link.
Where are my patterns kept?
In your account: you find them on any device once signed in. Accounts and data are hosted with Supabase.
Languages
Which languages?
English, French and Spanish, for the site and the patterns. Abbreviations follow the language; in English they are the Craft Yarn Council ones.
